Remember, no requirement to shuttle.  This is a fundraiser first, a shuttle event second.  Feel free to lob us a donation in any amount towards grant matching for purchase of ST240 trail machine -- http://nw-trail.org/donateST240

Want to know exactly how many signed up right now?  For up to second list, login at http://nw-trail.org and then visit http://nw-trail.org/2010shuttleday - there's a list of people who have signed up that displays only if you are logged in.  That's also where you find the link to SIGN-UP to reserve your spot (after you've made a minimum donation).

Northwest Trail Alliance is hosting a shuttle day event at Black Rock Mountain Bike Area (near Falls City, Oregon) for people who have donated $55 or more towards the match funding needed for purchase of ST240 singletrack trail construction machine.

The Cause

NWTA has been recommended for funding thru Oregon Parks & Recreation for an 2010 RTP grant requesting $90,000 towards project for purchase of trail machine, enclosed trailer, and operator training.   But NWTA needs to raise about $18,000 in match funding (we have secured $8,000 so far), and this shuttle fundraiser event will generate at least another $4,000 towards our goal.

How to earn a shuttle pass

Step 1: Donate!  To donate, use the NWTA Shopping Cart -- http://nw-trail.org/donateST240   a) add amount to cart, b) click Shopping Cart link to Checkout (and pay by credit card).  You can specify a larger amount if you wanted to.  why donate more?  I dunno, say, maybe because you wanted to attend Saturday evening shuttle event as well which requires minimum donation of $75 and just cuz you are giving to help pay for an awesome trail building machine to be owned and managed by NWTA under a new "Trail Development Partnership Program" (being developed).

To donate by mailing in a personal check, contact amy@nw-trail.org for instructions and be sure to specify ST240 donation in memo.

Donation Award Levels available:

"Full Meal Deal (you bring the meal)" Donation Level - If you  donate at least $75 towards grant matching, then you can sign-up (just once below) to receive two passes - one for evening of Saturday, July 24th (starting at 1pm-ish) and another pass for full day Sunday, July 25th.   Saturday Lunch/Dinner NOT provided.

"Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! (only)" Donation Level - If you donate at least $55 towards grant matching, then as a thank you for your support you can sign-up for a shuttle day pass on Sunday, July 25th.   LUNCH INCLUDED.   Shuttles start at 9am and run until 4:30pm.

Step 2:  REGISTER to RIDE!  After you donate, be one of the first 100 to sign-up for event (limit is 100 participants).  Must donate at least $55 (or $75 if shuttling Saturday evening), as a thank you for your support... You may register for this event!  Sign-in at nw-trail.org and click "Sign up for NWTA Black Rock Shuttle Day Fundraiser Event" to be added to participant list!

Note: shuttle passes ARE transferrable but sorry no refunds on donations.  Contact joer@nw-trail.org for registration transfers.

THANK YOU TO THE TRAIL BUILDERS

MUCH THANKS TO BRMBA!

We thank Black Rock Mountain Bike Association (BRMBA) for allowing NWTA to host this event on their trails and for their tireless dedication working to build and maintain these trails over the past 8 years to make Black Rock Mountain Biking Area into one of Oregon's best DH/Freeride specific trail systems on Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) managed public land.

NWTA will be discussing hosting a Fall volunteer trail work day in collaboration with BRMBA to help offset some of the wear/tear of this shuttle day event.  Respect!

The trails

trail map / driving directions : http://brmba.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4&Itemid=11

There are opportunities for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level riders to start from the top of Mount Brown and descend their choice of trail designed and built for DH and Freeride biking.   Many challenging trail features to "send it" (as the North Shore Canadians like to say) which have been featured in several recent mountain biking films (including New World Disorder).   Just search YouTube for "Black Rock Falls City" and you'll find many more videos from raving fans of this epic destination for gravity fueled fun!

Many of the challenging features have optional paths around for those that want to save it for the next run...!   Bonzai Downhill trail is designed for beginner freeriders, but is just as fun for advanced riders as well.  Great flowy design with multiple options.  Lots of berms, lots of rollable jumps, tons of fun!   There's also Sicter Gnar which has a re-routed section which is DH specific (used as the Black Rock Flow Cup race course).   And for the seriously addicted to air miles crowd, there is the black diamond Granny's Kitchen trail with everything thrown in (even the kitchen sink!).   If gap jumps are your thing, then you'll want to hit up Sunday Stroll into Brake Check...  Epic stuff!

Shuttle day fundraiser event details

NO DAY OF REGISTRATIONS!  There will be a limit of 100 participants.   Lunch is included.  You must provide your own bike, gear, and full face helmet (at least a helmet is REQUIRED).

Contact joer@nw-trail.org if you have specific questions.

Sign-in will open at 9am, and first truck will begin shuttle up Mount Brown by 9:30am.   Trucks will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm on Sunday, and starting about 3pm on Saturday (for those who have donated at least $75 and want to have an evening shuttle as well as full day shuttle on Sunday).

First aid tent will be located at Basic Training skill area (where the trucks will be reloading for shuttle up).

 We got funding!

Registrations...

On the Master List, there are actually 80+ people registered (paid and have notified they'll be shuttling).   20 have donated at least $75 so will be shuttling Saturday as well as Sunday!

We will be showing Follow Me and some other mtn bike vids at dusk at Basic Training on Saturday night.  All welcome.

See note sent to all participants above for other details (if interested).

So on the day of the

So on the day of the shuttle, I assume we need to check in before we start riding? Do we need to bring anything for proof that we paid and registered? Just want to be prepared

Just now... I emailed you

Just now... I emailed you and all participants registered for the event just now to answer this and many other questions.

Here is it for posterity however...

The Simple Facts / All You Need to Know...
#1 get to Black Rock Mountain Bike Area trailhead, and follow signs to event Parking area.  (there are directions on page at http://nw-trail.org/2010shuttleday).#2 Park (up above Orange gate along the Socialist Valley RD) - depending on what time you arrive you'll be parking 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile from Basic Training (where the check-in/truck loading is at)#3 Get yourself, your bike, and your gear to the Basic Training area where the CHECK-IN / INFO table will be located#4 fill out a waiver, get a wristband, and wait for a truck to arrive.
More info...
No, you don't need to bring proof of payment (if you got this email then you name is on list).  There is a Master List with your name, username and email address which the volunteers will be checking off after you sign waiver - then they hand you a wristband (and a lunch ticket).  Don't loose either of those or you'll be sorry (you'll have to spend precious time begging for a replacement instead of riding!).
SHUTTLES
Starting at 12:30pm on Saturday, July 24th (for those who have donated at least $75) and at 9am on Sunday, July 25th... Trucks will be leaving continuously from Basic Training to top of Mount Brown (most of the way to beginning of all the Black Rock trails).   We have 3 trucks... ONE HUGE 24' stakebed (with loading gate to step up onto) and TWO 16' stakebed trucks (without loading gate but we'll have a platform to step up onto).
We are DONE at 4:30pm on Sunday.   (We'll ride until people don't wanna ride no more on Saturday night!)- Hide quoted text -
LOADING
YOU load your bike and yourself onto the truck.   We'll have a volunteer who can help assist, but for fastest loading time - it's worked best to have riders load themselves.  Every other person leans against opposite side of truck with front wheel braced between legs and you hold onto your bike/side of truck.   It works great, trust us!  ;)

LUNCH
...is provided for those who donated/signed-up for event by Wednesday, July 21st.   If you signed-up later than Wednesday, then you'll want to pick something up to eat (A&N Home Town grocery in Falls City is closest place to Black Rock - you'll want to grab something before you get out to BR).
Menu: BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches, chips, fruit cup.   Soda is extra (bring $$$).   Water is free (bring hydration pack or water bottle - depending on how ya roll).   Don't eat meat?  A&N Home Town grocery... they have stuff.
FIRST AID
Located at Basic Training on Sunday.   Friendly volunteers from Mount Hood Patrol are there to assist!
It's going to be hot, so be aware of signs of heat exhaustion/stoke.   DRINK WATER BEFORE YOU ARE THIRSTY!  Stay hydrated.

Heat exhaustion:

This condition often occurs when people exercise (work or play) in a hot, humid place and body fluids are lost through sweating, causing the body to overheat. The person's temperature may be elevated, but not above 104 F.

Heat stroke:

Heat stroke, also referred to as heatstroke is a life-threatening medical condition. The person's cooling system, which is controlled by the brain, stops working and the internal body temperature rises to the point where brain damage or damage to other internal organs may result (temperature may reach 105 F or greater).

BIKE REPAIR
On Sunday, Riders and Sliders van will be at Basic Training with at repair tent fully stocked with most everything you'd need to get back on trail.  They'll have a bike mechanic on station all day.
ST240 Single Track Machine
Single Track LLC will have their production prototype on display at Basic Training.   It's the reason we're doing this shuttle day and what your money is going to help buy!

OTHER INFO
We will be showing Follow Me (and probably other biking vids) at Basic Training started at dusk on Saturday night.  All welcome.    You can thank Jacob Simmons for hooking us up with a killer sound system and a video projector to show vids.   He'll be playing music all day on Sunday at the truck loading area as well (make requests but don't be a jerk and try to stump the DJ with your weird music tastes - he's got a lot of MP3's but c'mon...!)
If you have ??'s day of event then go to the Info table at Basic Training (same place you checked in at).

BLACK ROCK FIRE SEASON REGULATIONS
NOTE!  This is a standard thing which happens every year and other than restrictions listed below does not impact the shuttle day event... As of July 24th, Black Rock Mountain Bike Area is now under a regulated closure due to fire season.  All lands protected by the WEST OREGON Forest Protection District and all forestland within one-eighth mile thereof is affected by this regulated closure.
NWTA does have legal access to the land under event permit (good thing we got that), but here are the restrictions:   Do NOT smoke in your vehicle except when traveling on improved (paved) roads, open fires are prohibited (Portable cooking stoves using liquefied or bottled fuels are allowed), chainsaw use prohibited, fireworks are prohibited; cutting, grinding and welding of metal is prohibited.   Possession of the following fire fighting equipment is required while traveling, except on state highways, county roads and driveways: one shovel and one gallon of water or one 2½ pound or larger fire extinguisher.
Maps of the subject area may be viewed at the State Forester's Office, in Salem, Oregon, and at principal offices of the Forest Protection District.  Definitions of words and phrases used in this proclamation may be found in ORS 477.001, OAR 629-041-0005, and at: https://oregon.gov/ODF/FIRE/Closures/definitions.pdf

THANK YOU!!
We are hosting this shuttle day to raise funds to help pay for an ST240 machine, trailer, and operator training.  It's your donations which will allow us to make the down payment NEXT MONTH which will kick off the manufacturing process to have an ST240 built up for NWTA.   It is the RTP grant for $75,000 that will allow us to pay the remainder of the balance for that purchase, but still... it's your donation that got it all started!   SO THANKS!  You rock.

I'm registered, finally!

I'm registered, finally! Cant wait.

Great chance to check out Black Rock if you haven't been there..

There's no better way to get mulitple runs at Black Rock than at a shuttle day.

Don't think about Black Rock as just a downhill/freeride area...  think of it as a bike-specific trail system.  Bonzai Downhill, for example, despite the 'downhill' name, is a flowy descent from top to bottom in 5 sections that is relatively mellow.  Trail riders of a wide range of skill levels can enjoy the bermed turns and obstacles and improve their riding.  Yes, you can even ride it on a hardtail and still have fun.

If you're on the fence about going, I would recommend giving it a shot, it will be a great time!

-Tom

I frequent Black Rock often

I frequent Black Rock often (once a week) as I live in Salem so lucky me I live close by. I love BR, and Bonzai is a great trail from top to bottom! I will be there, will donate tomorrow.

Cool, thanks for the info!

Cool, thanks for the info!

Craig Adams just donated

Craig Adams just donated for himself and for me for Sunday. Can't wait, see you guys this weekend!

So with 39 people signed up

So with 39 people signed up already, will you have more than one truck to shuttle riders? Im concerned of not getting enough rides in with all these riders if you only have one truck to shuttle.

We were planning on having

We were planning on having 3 trucks for 100 participants (40 to 1 has worked well at past events but we wanted to make this a special THANK YOU for donating event so bumped up number of trucks).  Average at past shuttles is 6 runs however people who are just riding, getting i nline, riding, getting in line (i.e. not messing around) have gotten in 12 runs.

Right now there are 41 people signed up, and if that doesn't hit 60 by Wednesday then I plan to cancel one of the trucks... or consider keeping all 3 but asking for people to help pay for the additional gas that'd cost (these trucks don't run on solar!)

helmetcam of Banzai Downhill (the easy trail)...

There's something for all levels at BR.   This video includes middle section of Banzai Downhill trail helmetcam footage along with short section of Sickter Gnar re-route used for DH racecourse -- http://www.pinkbike.com/video/148341/?trk=vlogo   That's 1/10th of what's available at BR.

You'll notice there are bypasses on most big features - if ya get sketched out riding up on wooden stuff for example.

A shuttle day is a great way to experience an area you haven't ridden yet.  Lots of opportunity to check out every nook, and tons of people willing to show ya the sights.

shuttle day

i went thru and payed twice, i need a spot for my son

Shuttle day slot availability...

As of June 16th, 20 of the 100 available slots have been reserved.

Donate today, and sign-up to reserve your space!

Event is 30% filled

3 weeks to go.  Now is when the registrations happen FAST.  if you wait to donate and sign-up, you WILL miss out.   And then I'll have to feel sorry for you... and you'll have to show up day of the event and hope other people weren't able to make it at last minute and then maybe can get in on the shuttle.  but that's no way to live...

Event is 25%

Event is 25% filled.

Remember... this is a fundraiser first, a shuttle day second. Meaning... yeah, $55 to shuttle is more than typical, but it's not about the shuttle day it's about getting $14,000 together as match grant funding towards purchase of the ST240 singletrack machine to put more sweet singletrack on the ground in the PDX region!

Received word this week from State grant manager that NWTA has been recommended for funding AND approved at the Federal level (environmental impact study approved as waived). We're in the "fund programming" stage now. Should be receiving official letter of grant before the July 25th shuttle event!

Stoked I have needed to be

Stoked I have needed to be back up there.

Can't Wait

SEE YOU THERE!

  Have been working thru

Have been working thru BRMBA to speak with ODF representative about getting permission for participants to park above the orange gate (drive up past Camp Tapawingo and park next to road after orange gate).

At this point, we have been told "no parking" except for volunteers.

Will know more shortly.  Don't get yer shorts up in a bunch over this.  Have several other alternative parking strategies... but past the orange gate is the ideal (and how it has been done past several events including most recent Black Rock Flow Cup).

Got official approval from

Got official approval from ODF last week to park above the orange gate.   Which is a huge relief because the alternative wasn't pretty.

Can't wait

Can't wait

bummer

Man I reallllly wish this didn't conflict with the NW Cup finals.  I was hoping it wouldn't conflict with anything after hearing the Flow Cup was scheduled the same weekend as the first Fluidride race.  Do you guys have a schedule of northwest events?

 It gets to be very

It gets to be very difficult to avoid overlap with all NW events between May and September.

Had originally shot for Memorial Day weekend, but Flow Cup got scheduled for that weekend.  Then was looking at a June weekend but it was a Fluidride... then proposed an early July timeframe but that was a big event NWTA had already slated (Mount Helens Fest).

Finally, I pretty much just said F it!  And slated for end of July cuz I figured there wasn't a free weekend anytime (even if Fall or mid-Winter there's all the build days and the cyclocross stuff...) After last shuttle day at Black Rock, I kinda promised people that I'd avoid the rainy season for shuttles. That reminds me, here's pics from past shuttle days at Black Rock -- http://itzphoto.smugmug.com/Mountain-Biking/Black-Rock-Shuttle-Day  And here's more -- http://itzphoto.smugmug.com/BRMBA-Shuttle-Day-fundraiser

But sorry you won't be able to attend the shuttle day.  Please consider donating towards the ST240 machine cuz that thing is gonna help put more trail on the ground in local area plus help maintain some existing stuff that needs to be re-routed or have grade reversals added, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions (with answers)

About the ST240 machine and the RTP grant...

RTP?

WTF?  Yeah.. that RTP stands for "Recreation Trails Program" grant.  It's federal money (comes from gas tax).  Grant program managed by Oregon Parks & Recreation Department.  Very difficult to rank high enough for funding - lots of agencies and organizations go after this money every year.   But NWTA's project has some solid scoring points to rank it highon list - such as fact it's mixed use project (equipment will be made available to projects in area for non-motorized as well as motorized projects).  Also, in my opinion, it's a "sexy" project.  Not just another application to help pay for trailhead a footbridge or re-surfacing, yada yada.

Can you tell me more about the ST240 singletrack trail machine?

No dude, that's totally top secret.  Actually, NWTA got couple of up close and personal looks at the ST240 during evaluation process to determine which equipment would be best suited for purchase for dedicated singletrack construction purposes.  And if picture are worth a thousand words, then here's 30 frames per second of pictures... Here is a 12 minute video which shows the capabilities of the ST240 machine on the designers factory proving grounds.  This vid is eye candy to any trail builder who has spent days in the woods swinging a McCloud to full bench along steep terrain.

The ST240 was designed by a local (North Plains) trail builder (Barret Brown) and is manufactured by a local manufacturing company near Salem (G-K).

Check out http://singletracktools.com for all the nuts and bolts stuff.   Bottomline: this isn't a landscaping machine.  It's designed to do singletrack trail construction in steep terrain.  It's right tool for the job when there isn't a ready and able team of 10 people willing to work hard all day long in the rain but who would rather be out riding their bikes (you know who you are).

About the Shuttle Day event...

Where can I find the "sign-up to attend" link to reserve a slot for the shuttle event?  Can't find it and I've already sent in a donation.

No worries... To see the sign-up link on the event page, you must be logged in to the website at http://nw-trail.org (click "signup for new account" to register a username if you have not already).   The link to signup for a new account on the website is on left side under "User Login".   Once you are logged in, then go to http://nw-trail.org/2010shuttleday and you'll find a list of everyone that's got a slot for the shuttle - right above that list is link to "Sign up for NWTA Black Rock Shuttle Day Fundraiser".

You should then see your username listed as an "individual signed up".   You've got a golden ticket to ride if you see that!

Yo!  I STILL can't see the sign-up link for this event even when logged in at nw-trail.org site!  What's up!?

Guess yer screwed.  Naw, just try a different browser (or drop an email to joer@nw-trail.org and I'll manually add your name to the list).   Have had reports that Google Chrome doesn't render the page correctly so hidden sign-up link not unhidding itself when logged in (bug with Drupal? *shrug*).

Someone also reported this work around to getting site to show the Sign Up list and link... "I still could not see the sign up even though I was logged in. I then clicked on my account and took a look at my settings. Then I went back to the main page and now all is there."   So apparently, try logging in, then click My Account, then go back to http://nw-trail.org/2010shuttleday and see if that helps.   (Drupal, I do not heart you.)

I'm under 18 or bringing someone who is under 18 is that ok?

Heck yeah!  Bring the whole family!  This is an all ages event.   If you've donated on behalf of your child in addition to yourself then don't forget to also reserve a slot for your child also! (separate username, or if you'd rather skip setting up an additional username for your child - then email to joer@nw-trail.org to indicate name of additional person(s) you want reservation for).

Day of event, you'll need to sign a parent/gaurdian form on behalf of the youth(s) you will be hanging out with during the event.   If your parent/gaurdian has cut you loose for the day, then you will need to have them sign this form ahead of time: http://www.nw-trail.org/files/Work%20Party%20Waiver.pdf

Can I mail in a donation instead of paying online thru the secure  Shopping Cart?

Yup.  E-mail amy@nw-trail.org if you have questions about mailing a donation.  But if you plan to attend the shuttle event, then checks MUST be received prior to Friday, July 23rd (no day of donations/registrations).

Make checks payable to:

NWTA

Put "ST240 donation" in the memo so it counts towards that (and your name matches up when you register for shuttle day - if you plan to attend).

And mail it to:

1505 SW 6th Ave
PO Box 1846
Portland, OR  97207-1846

I see there is already 100 people signed up for the event (this WILL happen), can I sign up anyways?

Knock yerself out.  Yes, you can sign up but it's only the FIRST 100 people who are gauranteed a slot when they arrive day of the event to sign-in and shuttle.   After 11:30am then we'll open up sign-in at table (at the shuttle day) to those who have donated at least $55 and that are standing around looking cool and like they might wanna shuttle or something.

I donated less than $55, can I shuttle just half the day or just on Saturday evening?

Thank you for your support!   But the minimum donation to get to shuttle as a BIG thank you is $55.

Also, be sure you've donated at http://www.nw-trail.org/donateST240 or mailed a check with memo that says "ST240 donation".  If it was $55 or more, then you can login at nw-trail.org and go to http://nw-trail.org/2010shuttleday to sign-up for the event (there's a link at the end of the event details with a list of bunch of people who have already donated and signed up).

Can I get a refund on my donation since something came up and I can't make it to the shuttle day event?

No refunds on donations.  But you can transfer your registration to somebody else (because your an awesome person)- to do that you email joer@nw-trail.org with name of person to transfer your ticket to ride over to (hopefully that's a really good friend or somebody who you already owe a huge favor to!)

How many runs will I be able to get in?

It depends.  How fast are you?  Seriously, average number of runs for past shuttle events is 6-8 but there's been riders that have gotten in 12 (you know who you are!).   We expect to have fast turn around on the shuttles since weather will be great i.e. not muddy and also there's smaller number of participants.

What kind of trucks will we be transported in?

Planning to run 3 flatbed/stakebed trucks and NO box trucks!!   Box trucks are cheap to rent but SUUUUCK to ride in the back of up a mountain road!

Can I bring a friend and switch off who rides?

Yeah sure bring a friend, but no you can't share a shuttle pass.   One shuttle pass per person.

What's the camping sitch?

See http://nw-trail.org/2010shuttleday
