The ST 240 Singletrack machine has been found!
Information below from the Oregon State Police press release:
Anonymous Crime Stoppers Tip Leads to Recovery of Stolen Trailer, $80,000 Trail Construction Machine; Investigation Continuing
"Oregon State Police (OSP), with the help of an anonymous tip reported to the Crime Stoppers program, recovered a trail construction machine and trailer stolen in late November from L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park in northwest Washington County. The investigation is continuing and a suspect has been identified but not charged.
According to OSP Detective Chris Schinnerer, on Decembeer 30, 2011 OSP troopers went to a Forest Grove-area property following up on an anonymous tip that equipment similar to the stolen "Northwest Trail Alliance" trail construction machine and trailer was at the property. Detectives and troopers contacted the property owner and received his consent to search the area, subsequently finding the trail construcion machine concealed in a heavily forested area. The stolen trailer was also found and recovered.

OSP notified "Northwest Trail Alliance" that their property was recovered. No arrests have been made but Schinnerer said a suspect has been identified.
The trailer and trail construction machine were stolen late November after forced entry was made into an enclosed maintenance compound at L. L. "Stub" Stewart State Park. Inside the trailer were various tools, accessories and a ST240 trail construction machine valued at $80,000.
Crime Stoppers and "Northwest Trail Alliance" were offering a reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
No other information will be released at this time pending the ongoing investigation. OSP thanks the Crime Stoppers program for helping publicize this case."
12/12/2011 UPDATE: Up to $2,000 REWARD is offered for information leading to an arrest and the recovery of NWTA's trail construction machine and trailer. Oregon State Police (OSP) is investigating the case. Crime Stoppers case #11-45.

Between 4:30 p.m., November 29, and 7:00 a.m., November 30, unknown suspect(s) forced entry into an enclosed maintenance compound at "Stub" Stewart State Park and stole NWTA's utility trailer containing ST240 and various tools.
Enclosed utility trailer is 18' gray Xtera dual axle and (had) "Northwest Trail Alliance" black logo with IMBA logo on both sides of trailer. The ST240 with various tools and accessories are inside the trailer. Trailer most likely has had logos removed or covered. Distinctive feature of trailer is right rear fender is dented and slightly bent, rear door has custom heavy duty hinge, and marine grade plywood floor inside is new (replaced in summer).
Oregon License plate: U449427 (plate could have been replaced by now)

Wow, that is just awful! Is there an insurance policy on this trailer and tractor?
insurance
Even though there is insurance... this is a set back in more ways than one. There were tasks to be completed this winter as well as some plans for the spring which would have opened up larger section of single track at Stub mountain bike area... Now, we're lacking equipment to do those jobs, and even if investigation goes cold (which it very much isn't cold at this point) then it'd be months and months before we have a replacement for this one of a kind machine. at minimum plans are set back by 1 - 1.5 years.
I planned to apply for 2012 RTP grant funding to purchase additional equipment to augment our ST240 as our work horse... but would YOU give money to an organization that just lost the equipment you'd previously funded? It might not be worth my time to complete the application process because we'll wash out for that reason alone.

Last night KGW broadcast a more detailed news story about this theft...

What a gut wrenching thing to have stolen. I'm so happy the equipment was recovered, but the fact the perpetrators behind the theft are still out there leaves an uneasy feeling. I'm sure others in the area who have excavating equipment like bulldozers and wheel loaders are grateful that you made the theft of your ST240 public so that they can take extra precautions to keep their equipment safe. Hopefully this crime did not get your projects too far off schedule. It is great work you guys do, and I hope you have a very fruitful spring and summer trail season!
ST240 parts list...
We are facing reality that due to fact ST240 is such as custom piece of equipment, that it'll most likely get parted out...
If you regularly attend local equipment auctions or troll the craigslist and other classified ads, then you could help NWTA (and Oregon State Police) by keeping eye out for these items that seem to be offered at prices to good to be true:

Winch - Warn 4700lb
Battery – Odyssey Extreme PC1230T-A (side post)
Winch rope – Amsteel blue, ¼”X 75 feet
Hydraulic pump – Sauer-Danfoss LR30D. Load-sensing, pressure compensating
Drive motors – TMTW 470 151Z3276

(thanks to Single Track Tools for provided details on the ST240 parts!)
Other NWTA utility trailer NOT stolen...
NWTA has another utility trailer which is white, single axle, and has green/gray color logo on side. It is *not* stolen.
Police hotline has been getting tips about this trailer... people think it is the one which was stolen. But it's the larger tandem axle and is silver/gray (and had black logos).
Good that people are keeping an eye out for NWTA's stolen property. Most likely the trailer no longer has the logos, and might not even be gray anymore, etc... distiguishing features are a bent/dented right rear fender and a custom rear door hinge (heavy duty) - and the wood floor inside is new (relatively).
Here's photo of the trailer that is NOT stolen... (see main article http://nw-trail.org/forum/trail-care-trail-building/general/2928 for pics of the actual stolen trailer and equipment).

'tis the season for thievery:

news article in Oregonian
That caught my eye also in the newspaper in breakroom when I was grabbing some coffee this morning. Was actually scanning for an article about NWTA's equipment theft... there will be one soon in Oregonian from the angle of impact to volunteer trail development projects in region due to this theft.
Also made me think of this factoid on the LoJack.com website... (that 19% stat _really_ made me much less hopeful that we'll ever be getting NWTA's ST240 back...)
The facts speak for themselves:
Industry sources estimate annual losses from heavy equipment theft are as high as $1 billion
71 percent of equipment owners have experienced equipment theft recently1
As little as 19 percent of stolen heavy equipment is ever recovered2

2. National Equipment Register 2011

re: Trailer Found - now how about some Justice?
It's great news that the OSP solved the crime and recovered the Trail Machine and Trailer. Given the nature of the crime, and what we DO, I think the Judge should dole out some community service to be put in on NWTA's projects, Old School style:

Even though some of NWTA's
Even though some of NWTA's property has been recovered (and the bulk of it being the ST240), OSP still has an active investigation under way with a suspect at large. Nobody has been charged (yet).
But I like yer thinking! That'd be pretty sweet justice indeed.
