Trail Build/Camp/Ride at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park

Super sized trail building, camping, and riding weekend!   If you've ever helped at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park to build the mountain biking singletrack, then this weekend is not to be missed.   We hope to be ready to open the upper trail loop to the public during this event.

Saturday - trail work party (placing trail signage? finishing work?) followed by celebration (CAKE!) back at conference center at Cabin Village.   CHECK-IN for trail work group at Welcome Center parking area by 9am.   We should be back at Cabin Village for Hot Dog BBQ/Cake by about 2pm (all are welcome whether having worked this day or a past volunteer build day).

Small group of people are camping Saturday night (fee is waived for volunteers working trail!) - most camp sites already reserved - but there's hike-in first come/first serve camping spots available (some plan to camp at hike-in area).

Mtb Singletrack Trail work party at L.L. Stub State Park

FIRST scheduled work party for 2010 trail building series of events to be hosted by Northwest Trail Alliance at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park.  A list of all Spring 2010 NWTA scheduled build days at Stub is posted to the Project Updates message forum.

Special bonus!... besides the points you'l earn towards the NWTA end of year raffle, we'll also be doing a raffle at the build day just for those attending this volunteer event.  For those who would like to stick around after the volunteer work is done, there will also be a BBQ back at a campsite in the park (email joer at nw-trail.org if interested).

Volunteer trail work in singletrack area for XC trail is under guidance of John Joy and Joe Rykowski as co-trail stewards in collaboration with Ranger Steve Kruger as the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department trail manager at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park.

2010 Status and schedule of NWTA build days at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park

Last night, the adopt-a-park agreement was presented to NWTA board of directors by Parks & Recreation ranger and trail manager Steve Kruger.   The 2010 agreement and associated project plan is being reviewed by board members currently with expectation that by early March a signed agreement will be returned to Oregon Parks & Recreation Department (OPRD).

Should be noted that this agreement is first of its kind under the new OPRD draft policy for engaging proponent organizations as trail construction partners.  In the past, they have only entered into adopt-a-park agreements with proponent groups for trail maintenance activities.  Understandably, it appeared that the NWTA board was excited to have this opportunity to enter into a level of collaboration with a land manager which showcased the mission to help build mountain biking trails.

John Joy and myself (Joe Rykowski) will remain as co-trail stewards for this project under 2010 agreement and will be reporting to Tom Slovak, the NWTA Trail Care Director for 2010.

Current Condition: Buxton (B-V trail) up Hares Canyon to Mtb Zone Loop and back

1/25/2010: Rode from Buxton trailhead (no cost for day use) on Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail to Stub Stewart State Park and up on Hares Canyon to Hilltop and then over to Mtb Zone access and the single track loop.  This is about 13 mile ride... roughly 1/3 paved, 1/3 shared-use (wide dirt trail), 1/3 single track (natural surface).

Riding Buxton up Hares, then mtb single track loop and back is an Intermediate level ride (about 13 miles).  If starting at Hilltop and riding just the mtb single track loop (back to Hilltop) would be a Beginner level ride (about 4 miles).

Encountered 0 other users on trail.

NWTA proposal submitted to OPRD for XC singletrack at Stub

The following was approved by the NWTA board, and I have submitted this to the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department under their draft policy for engaging proponent user groups for trail projects.
