Forest Park

Wissahickon

Here is a story about Wissahickon park in Philly.  The park is very similar to Forest Park in size and terrain.  Every time I hear about the trail debate in Forest Park I think about Wissahickon.  It is a perfect example of how single track could work in Forest Park.  Miles and miles of shared single track and everyone pretty much gets along well.

Oregon Field Guide wants your FP/trails feedback

OPB/ ORegon Field Guide want to know what you think about the city's decision not to allow more mountain bike access in Forest Park.

Later this month we will be taking a 1/2 hour look at Forest Park's history, including discussion of the current debate over mountain bike trail access in the park. But we just started a new facebook page and we have included a new blog post about today's decision . Please feel free to share your thoughts on our page: http://www.facebook.com/oregonfieldguide

Letters to Oregonian Editor

Nick Fish and Parks will announce their latest decision on Forest Park today or tomorrow.  Please consider submitting a short letter to the editor to the Oregonian about their decision when it is announced.  A bunch of opponents are likely to write in, and it would be good to have cyclists heard.

This page has their guidelines and lists their e-mail submission address (letters@news.oregonian.com):

FPC Newton Road Clearing

On Friday I met with several members of the Forest Park Conservancy trail crew for some routine maintenance on Newton Road/Trail in the North section of Forest Park.  We had a great time brushing the creek section of the route which is shown as a single dotted line on page 2 of this map.  We ran into a few Fire Department folks checking the roads/trails for emergency access.  Two Fire staff on quads attempted to use the trail that we just cleared, but turned around quickly as they could not navigate the tight single track on the bulky machines.  This trail is in great shape right now, so be sure to include it on your rides in the park.

Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland against Forest Park access

From this article on Oregonlive.com http://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2010/06/in_forest_park_bikin...

I decided to check and see if any of my doctors are part of the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland. Luckily, none are but if I had found a name on the list I'd have called, cancelled appointments and changed doctors.

Oregonian article on the FP offroad cycling committee

The Oregonian has a decent article about the FP offroad cycling committee's report (where is the report?).

Headline "Both sides are dissatisfied with a panel's report on bike access at Portland's Forest Park", here:
